Motivation!

An interview with Burke Muggoch (B) by the Real World Cruising Staff (RWC)

RWC: How would you describe learning from Guy?
B: Learning from Guy is a very smooth process because he has the ability to listen to your questions and formulate responses that are on the level with your understanding. He can talk to you on your level if you are totally new and he can talk to you on your level if you have sailed around the world. He really takes the time to listen to your particular question or issue and gets to the bottom of the problem you personally are trying to understand or solve. Above all he is very patient and seems unable to get frustrated with questions.

RWC: What did Guy help you with?
B: I have to admit I consulted with Guy on nearly everything before we went cruising. He has always had information on everything in the world of cruising. If I had a question about a specific problem or product he always had an answer. I think one of the more unique things about Guy is that he can help with every single aspect of a boat. He can survey it, he can rig it, he can plumb it, he can wire up the electrical, he can re-power it, basically he is a sailboat encyclopedia.

RWC: Other than technical advice what areas has RWC helped you with?
B: In addition to Guy working with me, my wife was able to learn from Melissa about provisioning, what to expect in different countries and issues specific to women. Guy was their through the whole process helping us stay motivated, on target, and on budget.

RWC:
Are you still learning from Guy?
B: Yes, I am now on my third boat and he is the one I called when I needed a survey and advice. I am currently restoring it and he still is the one I call when I need some consulting on anything related to the boat.

RWC: How did Guy help you cut the dock lines?
B: Well there is the physical boat work which helped, but I think one of the primary things that helped was his ability to motivate us in a way that was so matter of fact that I never thought of not going. It never felt like it was a difficult process it just felt like it was simply a process of getting ready then going. I think many people talk of going and they look at the romantic and adventurous part of cruising in the magazines but the reality of it is overwhelming and deep down they know they don't really want to go. I think he can see into that and help those that really do want to go realize their dreams.
