Survey Your Boat

2010 Dates to be announced

Whether you already own your ideal cruiser, or are looking for her now, a good boat survey is critical to your cruising plans. This document is the basis for planning and prioritizing the maintenance and upgrades that need to be done on your boat to prepare her for cruising. In this two day, hands on seminar RWC will teach you how to uncover the secrets to the systems in your dream cruising boat. We will provide you guidelines, checklists, sample survey forms, and orders of operations. Then we will take you to the docks, where we will guide you through a stem to stern, mast to keel survey of several boats as you practice your new found skills.

Here at RWC we believe that surveying your boat is an ongoing process. It is not something that happens once at the time of purchase, but rather something that happens every time you step on the deck of your boat. Your safety and the safety of your loved ones and guests depends on your accurate knowledge of the condition of your boat. We will teach you how to accurately assess your boat’s condition, and help you categorize and prioritize the projects. We will help you develop a plan to stay on top of boat maintenance so you can spend more time cruising and less time working on the boat.

Topics include: cabin layout, hull integrity, electrical systems, generators, watermakers, engines, water systems, tankage, stowage, sails and sail inspection, rigging, deck layout, corrosion, and more!

Other questions we teach you to answer:

  • Is my boat safe for what I want to do with?
  • An inexpensive boat with signs of deferred maintainence, deal or no deal?
  • Why do owners always think their boat is worth more than comparable boats? (And how to overcome this obstacle)
  • Is this boat insurable?
  • Market value vs. hype.
  • How to get more out of your boat when you sell it.
  • What is this boat really worth?
  • Is this boat suitable to use for my purposes?
  • What to offer and how to make the offer.

How to prepare for this seminar:

If you already own a boat you are encouraged to bring photos of any items you have questions about, engines, thruhulls, corrosion pictures, rigging, etc. You may bring copies of old surveys. If you are still looking for your perfect cruiser, come with your photos or ads of your ideal boat. Dress comfortably and be prepared to visit all the nooks and crannies, bilges and, lazzarettes of our demo boats.

Note to First Mates from a First Mate:

Don't be intimidated by the technical sounding nature of this seminar. Whatever your role may be on board your keen objective eye is still crucial to spotting potential problems and heading them off before they become maintenance disasters. We'll teach you how to spot those early warning signs as you rummage through the bottom of dark lockers, bilges, and other nooks and crannies. Whether you like to get down and dirty with the oil filters, or prefer to be the ship's navigator, we have something here for you too. We believe this so strongly there is a special discount for you! Bring your questions, and don't let your Captain attend this seminar without you!
